5 lessons to learn as a white belt

Kayla Harrison wins second Olympic Gold medal!

Another gold medal for USA Judoka Kayla Harrison, showcasing newaza at the highest level, with an arm bar in the finals against World number 2 Audrey Tcheumeo of France.  In addition, team mate Travis Stevens won his semi finals match with a beautifully executed bow and arrow choke, showing that there's more to Judo than throwing for Ippon.

Olympic bow and arrow win for Travis Stevens!

The bow and arrow is one of my favourite submissions and I was taught killer technique in its various forms way back in the 90's by my Judo coach Matthew Clempner, my Trad JJ coach Trevor Roberts and No Gi coach Jack Mountford.

Since then it's been in my bag of tricks ever since and US Judoka Travis Stevens used it in his semi finals match against the Georgian World number 1 Avtandil Tchrikishvili and it really is a beauty to watch.

WAR Team Maximus!!

Best of luck to my old student and brother from another mother, Mitchell 'Maximus' Richards, who is busy training hard for his upcoming MMA fight against Shaun Hampton in September at FCC17 in Manchester.

The photos show us at the Billy Robinson seminar a few years back in Manchester; we went together and when I was getting changed, I realised I'd forgot to pack my shorts and there was only Mitchell with a spare pair and they were massive :)

Three hours of training with my shorts falling down, a la Carry On style (with a 'phooooop' each time they fell down) to much laughter from everyone, a most memorable seminar indeed :)

Last night's class

Another busy class, with a handful of new starters all enjoying a hardcore session last night, with plenty of drills, specifics and rolling thrown in for good measure. The next competition in our crosshairs will be the Southend Open at the end of September, so lots of hard work ahead, plus additional classes at London Fight Factory to really sharpen the iron.

Next class tomorrow night, see you on the mats!
