Jiu Jitsu for everyone...

My student Ali is profoundly deaf and wears implants so he can hear the outside, yet when he trains he has to take them off and he's on his own and depends on me for communication.  In the short time he's been with us, I've learned to sign the alphabet, some general phases, Jiu Jitsu positions and sign for NMBJJ, but most fun of all is the swear words he's going to show me!

Learning sign language is something I've wanted to do for many years but now I have to learn in order to make Ali feel like part of the team and it's very rewarding when I get the signing correct and my students are picking up sign language too, so it's a win-win for everyone at the club.

Ali's a huge inspiration to young deaf people and shows that Jiu Jitsu is for everyone and I hope that more deaf people take up Jiu Jitsu as a result of me posting this news up on my social media, tagging the deaf community in on Facebook and IG.

Last night's class

Great to be back on the mats with my monkeys, after a two week break soaking up the sun :)

Back to the grindstone now...

Congrats Deninho!

What a weekend for Fight Sports!

HUGE congrats to Deninho, finishing third out of 1900 athletes for the 2019 season...everyone here at Wimbledon BJJ are sending you good vibes on your fantastic achievement, a real inspiration to everyone here at the club!

GO CYBORG!!

Absolutely HUGE congrats to the Bossman Cyborg on his phenomenal achievement yesterday, winning the IBJJF Heavyweight Grand Prix in Las Vegas; the division was stacked with beasts and Cyborg showed the world of what can be achieved through hard work, discipline and unswerving belief in oneself...truly inspirational for all his students around the world and here at Wimbledon BJJ, we all salute you Mestre!

Back from holidays!

The Northern Monkey is back in the UK and looking forward to getting back on the mats at Wimbledon BJJ with his fellow monkeys, preparing for the upcoming Street Fighter 2 BJJ comp in October...whilst away, a number of his favourite t-shirts were repped out in the sunshine, drawing a fair bit of attention on the evening walks along the harbour in Paphos...

Lots to do in the coming weeks, hard work from everyone and a whole team effort as always in the upcoming Training Camp...

Oooss!

Last night's class

The Northern Monkey was in the house last night at Wimbledon BJJ, enjoying another great session of Jiu Jitsu; Cyborg's tornado throw from standing and butterfly guard was covered in class, together with specifics and sparring and I got to learn a couple of new words in sign, related to Jiu Jitsu, so many thanks to Ali our deaf student, looking forward to learning a lot more in the future...

Masters Division rash guard...

Nothing but the best for the Northern Monkey, proudly repping the awesome Masters Division from the guys over at Bain in Canada...

Old Man Jiu Jitsu!

If you're a grappler of a certain age division, head on over to bainstore.com and grab yourself one!

Monday's class

Bit of a quiet one on Monday, with the holiday season in full swing affecting numbers, but that never stops those that make it to class having fun and getting to twist up fools.

Prison rules from the butterfly guard was on there menu, playing around with vaporisers, knee bars and heel hooks, with not a word to the IBJJF...

More of the same tonight I say!

Saturday Open Mat

Great session yesterday over at Wimbledon BJJ with our monthly Saturday session, which was open mat style; plenty of rolling, sweating, teaching and chilling was had by all and the best part of the session was the team bonding over at the local Wetherspoons, sinking a few beers and eating fine food.

All in all, a great day of training and socialising, looking forward to the next one!

Last night's class

Another top session with the Northern Monkey last night; carrying on from Monday night's class of opening the closed guard, I dropped in an uber slick move known as the Rock Star guard pass, which I was shown in Rio in 2010, whilst training at Gordo's academy.

If you search this move online, most likely you'll see me on You Tube as a brown belt showing this move on one of my students, go check it out and drill it out!
