Good riddance to 2020!

Well, it's been a very different year this year, challenging to say the least!  With the help of my loyal and supporting students, Wimbledon BJJ has weathered the storm so far and with a new vaccine ready to be rolled out, hopefully we will all be back on the mats early in the New Year.

Thanks to everyone that's read the Blog and left me your kind words, very much appreciated!

Massive shout to all the Fight Sports London team and all Fight Sports clubs around the world and to all my martial arts friends around the globe, have a great night tonight and all the very best for 2021, hope to see you all soon!

Oooss!

Double arm bar from closed guard

Here's a short and cheeky little video that deals with a super Old School techniques, that I first learned way back in the early 90' from my Traditional Jiu Jitsu instructor Trevor Roberts.

It can really catch people out when they get a bit too comfortable in the closed guard and the submission comes on super fast, so make sure you get the tap in fast!

Brabo choke from closed guard

I sincerely hope you have all enjoyed a few days of eating, drinking and relaxing as much as possible under these Covid restrictions and hopefully we will be back training in the New Year.

In the meantime here's a video for you all to enjoy; it's one of my favourite submissions and as this Blog is aimed at grapplers of a certain age and Mid Life Rollers (a very popular Facebook and IG group) I'm looking to add more and more videos that work for me and work for you, so watch the video and drill it with your training partners and let me know when you hit the submission in a roll :)

It's been a funny old year to say the least, but it's one more sleep until the Big Day...

I hope all you readers out there are with someone and not alone over the festive season and having a well earned break until the New Year, let's hope it's a damn sight better than 2020...

Merry Christmas!

Half guard sweep - when the opponent defends the Old School sweep

As the old saying goes, BJJ is like a game of chess, you have to be a few moves ahead of your opponent and this video shows you one way of doing this; attacking with the Old School sweep can set you up for other sweeps and if you hit the Old School, well done!

This video shows one option when your opponent defends the Old School entry, so please subscribe and enjoy the videos...

Old School half guard sweep

With the vast majority of us stuck in Tier 3, I've finally got my finger out and started sorting out a handful of technique videos that have been gathering dust in my laptop and getting them posted on my You Tube channel.

This sweep oozes Old School and I first learned this as a white belt way back in 1999 at the Machado academy in Los Angeles and I've been using it ever since.

Please subscribe to the channel to enjoy more videos :)

Wimbledon BJJ - You Tube channel!

Please subscribe to my You Tube channel, it's called Wimbledon BJJ :)

A look at Nelsons with the Northern Monkey

Here's a little You Tube video, where I go over the series of Nelsons at Wimbledon BJJ...

A nelson hold is a grappling hold executed by one person from behind the opponent, generally when both are on the mat face down, with the opponent underneath the aggressor.

In wrestling, a nelson is used to control an opponent or to turn them onto their back and execute a pin; in BJJ, they are a great addition to your grappling arsenal when your opponent turtles up and can be used to pin an opponent with a mind to advance position and also sets up submissions.

I have used the quarter nelson in many live situations on the doors, after softening up the aggressor with strikes, the quarter nelson works a treat in getting the aggressor to the ground, where you can control and restrain.

You can find a video on my You Tube channel covering this technique, which I will post on here soon.

Please subscribe to the channel and enjoy the videos!

Wimbledon BJJ - closed AGAIN!

Sad news today as London enters Tier 3 in a bid to bring down the rising number of Covid cases...this means that classes are no longer running until London returns to Tier 2.

In a bid to ease the boredom, I'll be endeavouring to post more technique videos on here and other fun stuff, so keep your eyes peeled and fingers crossed for a quick return to Tier 2...

Lasso guard sweep

Another video on offer today, whilst there's nothing much else to do than trawl through You Tube and social media, watching tech videos and anything BJJ related, to help pass the time.

This was filmed a year ago at Wimbledon BJJ and is one of my favourite sweeps from the lasso guard position...I hope you like it and please hit the subscribe button :)

PSP London classes postponed...

Due to the lockdown and the uncertainty with what will follow after the lockdown expires on December 2nd, PSP London classes that were due to start on November 16th, will now start up in the New Year.

Lockdown Part Two!

Wimbledon BJJ had its last class last night, as we now enter into another lockdown; this lockdown is set to end on December 2nd, so will have to see what replaces it, hopefully something that allows us to re-open in December.

I'd like to thank my students for their support all year and looking forward t getting back on the mats soon :)

Ooos!

New blue belt!

The race to purple belt is ON!

Two years ago today, my first set of white belts were promoted to blue belts at London Fight Factory; all but one student in the photo are still training with me, the one guy that's not, recently moved away with his family, but is still training Jiu Jitsu.

Now the two years has passed, it's a race for the guys to get the next coloured belt around their waists...

Last night's class

Hard work and lots of fun on the mats last night, trying to stay one step ahead of this pesky virus; working to build strong immune systems is the best way, in my humble opinion, to tackle this virus.  Far better than queuing up outside well known burger and chicken outlets, contributing to underlying health conditions...

Carlson Gracie Rio - 2010

This photo popped up in my FB feed today, can't believe it was ten years ago that I went over to Rio!

Had an amazing experience at Carlson's club whilst I was out there, the legendary Saporito took the class and ended with some awesome rolls with the brown and bald belts there and also got to meet Carlson's wife.

Happy memories indeed - I'm on the back row in a black Gi...

Four years a black belt!

On this day in 2016, my long and winding journey to black belt finally came to fruition at London Fight Factory, as my coach Luiz Ribeiro wrapped the faixa preta around my waist, in front of one of my all time Jiu Jitsu heroes Leo Vieira and over 150 students and a dozen black belts.

I couldn't have asked for anything better receiving my black belt in such company.

One year ago, I was awarded my first stripe, once again at London Fight Factory off none other than Cyborg on an even more crowded mat and even more black belts.

Hard work has been duly rewarded and I'm looking forward to getting my second strip in a couple of years.

NEVER give up on your dreams!

PSP London flyer!

I received the PSP London flyer today, which is currently in print, so I can get the immediate area covered and advertised, along with promoting the classes on social media.  I'll are back shortly with a firm start date, as the dates have been postponed a couple of times, but with the flyers on the way, everything is nicely falling into place...

PSP - Situational Awareness

At PSP, we place a large emphasis on teaching the soft skills of self protection, as these can help you avoid ending up in a bad situation and get you home safely. The Cooper Colour Code awareness system is recognised worldwide, categorising four main levels of awareness; anyone training in self protection should be aware of this system, which is very easy to understand and implement into your daily living.

The Colour Code will be discussed in depth at PSP London classes and on all PSP seminars in the future.

Be aware. Be safe!

PSP London - coming soon!
