Wimbledon BJJ's newest member!

It's a pleasure to welcome Marta, aka the White Eagle, to the club and Northern Monkey family; the club now has seven active female students and we are always keen for more women to start training at the club.

Bon voyage to Seung!

Last night, we said goodbye to Seung, who's been visiting his parents in the UK and is heading back to South Korea, to go back to university...he's been an absolute pleasure to teach and he even managed to get to compete at the Grappling Industries event.

He will be back in the Summer, so safe journey brother, it's been great having you at the club and we all all look forward to seeing you again in a few months :)

Faixa roxa in the house!!

HUGE congrats to Mehmet, Wimbledon BJJ's newest purple belt...well deserved!

RIP Keith Owen

I'm really shocked and saddened to hear that US BJJ legend Keith Owen has passed away; I became friends with Keith after I reviewed his DVD's many moons ago and although I never trained with him, we became good friends online.

Keith was a great and friendly guy, genuinely interested in my Jiu Jitsu journey and always had time to chat to me about Jiu Jitsu and life in general.

Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and I'm teaching tonight, so will dedicate my class to Keith by teaching a few of his Favorite Moves :)

BJJ or Valentine's Night?

Had a great turn out last night over at SW19, as the majority of monkeys rightfully chose Jiu Jitsu over romance and cheap roses :)

Great work from everyone, every class counts as we get ready for Brighton :)

Daily White Belt Routine!

As always from Because Jitsu, more very accurate memes on the training habits of BJJ'ers, starting with the white belts :)

Super Saturday Session!

Had a great session yesterday with the monkeys, granting one student's request of a shark tank, as he gets ready for the Brighton Open :)

Great to see one of my old students Jas Singh, pop his head round the door for a quick chat, as he was in town visiting friends, look forward to seeing him next time on the mats.

After training, we went over to see our newest recruit Marta, who manages the Hand and Racquet pub at the bottom of Wimbledon Hill, a short walk from the gym; post training rehydration was conducted, with tall tales told too :)

A great day, looking forward to more competition training tomorrow night :)

More new starters last night, including a new female, who joined in the fun and games of the Brighton Open training camp :)

Lots of hard work from everyone, plenty of drilling, specifics and shark tanks of all shapes and sizes :)

Stripe #1!

Huge congrats to our Hungarian brother Antal, who was awarded his first stripe on his white belt last night :)

The Road To Grappling Industries - The Director's Cut

As promised, here's the full video, showing the students getting ready for the Grappling Industries Round Robin event at the weekend just gone.

Huge thanks to Nabs for coming down and doing the filming at the club and at the comp, where he was also competing and to my assistant instructor George for making the opening title.

Nabs did a sterling job filming last week, he's managed to capture the atmosphere and good vibes at the gym :)

The Brighton Open Training Camp is ON!

Last night makes the start of the Brighton Open Training Camp...we currently have four white belts and two blue belts registered, two whites will be popping their competition cherry :)

All the students are fired up for this comp, after a great day out at the Grappling Industries comp at the weekend :)

Stripe #1 for the lads!

HUGE congrats to Joe and Jun, who were awarded their first stripe on their white belt; well and truly on the road to Jiu Jitsu enlightenment :)

Wimbledon BJJ at Grappling Industries!

The club had its first competition of the year yesterday over at Kensington Leisure Centre, with the Grappling Industries round robin event; Gi and No Gi was covered on the day together with the kids and Absolute division, which made for a very long day, with my students competing at 820pm in the No Gi division!

My students had a minimum of four matches in the Gi and eight matches doing Gi and No Gi, which is no mean feat for anyone; three of the four guys that competed were doing so for their first time and were really thrown in at the deep end.

No complaints from anyone, as some fights only had a break of five minutes and then they were back on; sadly no medals for the lads, but game plans were executed, points scored and submissions in the bag, fighting against seasoned three and four stripe white belts from the big London clubs.

I'm very proud of all the lads for stepping up and competing in such a large event, the standard was very high and the lads did the club proud with their performances; we are small fry compared to the big established London clubs, but we gave everyone a good fight and we can hang in with the big clubs.

Plenty to take home for everyone and back to the drawing board tomorrow, as we get ready for the Brighton Open in March.

Huge thanks to all the students who came and supported the lads and to George and Louis for keeping the lads up to speed on what time they were fighting and to Mike for filming all the lads on the mats.

Oos!

New purple belt in the house!

HUGE Onnittulet as they say in Finland, to young Liinus, AKA The Viking on his well deserved promotion to purple belt last night, after a gruelling shark tank of course :)

Liinus has certainly put the hours in at the club, the Dog House and at home in Finland and it was an absolute pleasure to upgrade his belt last night.

It was also a special dateline for the promotion...2-2-22 :)

Training camp is over - roll on Saturday!

We had our last competition class last night at SW19, the lads are as ready as they'll ever be and looking forward to seeing the guys compete in Gi and No Gi.

Huge congrats to everyone that's been involved in the training camp, it's really been a team effort getting the lads ready and in shape :)

Oos!

Three monkeys Down Under!

It's three years now since three of my old students left Wimbledon BJJ and the UK and went off on separate travels, before all settling down in Melbourne and training at Absolute MMA!

Awesome!!

Great to see Juliette, Graeme and Kelz still out there training and repping the Northern Monkey rash guard Down Under :)

Filming at Wimbledon BJJ this week!

It was a pleasure to finally have Nabs down at the club last night, who is here to do some filming of the students in their training sessions this week, as they get ready for the Grappling Industries competition this coming Saturday.

Covid and work commitments have kept Nabs away in 2021, but he's here now and was busy filming last night and will be back tomorrow and will also be the comp on Saturday to film the lads competing.

Really looking forward to the end result!

Last night's class

An excellent end to the month of January, with another full house and a killer competition class in the bag last night...sadly, two students have had to pull out of the competition at the weekend due to injuries, which aren't serious thankfully, so both are resting up and will be there on Saturday to cheer their team mates on!
