Last night's class

 Our last session before Christmas was enjoyed by all, lots of flow rolling and Q&A's was the order of the evening, looking forward to a week's rest, back on the mast on the 27th :)

Christmas Night Out!

 It's been a long time since were had a Christmas night out at the club for lots of reasons, this year I made an executive decision and dropped a firm date in and was blown away by the turn out!

Was a truly awesome evening and for one night only, you got to see me in long trousers :)

Last night's class

 Two more classes at Northern Monkey HQ before Christmas and with no more comps this year, I had it in my head we'd have a chilled one, but these things never go to pain and after drilling open guard passes and a side control escape, we hit the specifics and sparring.

With lower numbers than usual due to monkeys going back home abroad for the holidays, there wasn't as many chances to get the breath back as one minute you're in the specifics, finish, get back on your feet and someone else is ready and the way I picked out sparring partners almost killed everyone, something I'll save for the competition training camps :)

At the end of class, there was a large heat and steam haze in the room, akin to the Turkish baths, proof that everyone had worked hard :)

Last Wednesday's class

 A late post for last Wednesday's class but better late than never; another guard passing master class for the monkeys and lots of specifics and sparring to end yet another thoroughly enjoyable session :)

Student of the Year 2023 - Erik Domsodi!

 Last night gave me immense pleasure in awarding young Erik Wimbledon BJJ Student of the Year 2023, a no brainer to be honest, given his phenomenal success competing this year :)

An amazing achievement from the young man, Erik has worked hard all year and hard work always pays off :)

Everyone at the club are super proud and we look forward to more medals to come in 2024!

 Erik came in last night with all his medals from competing this year...eight gold, nine silver and two bronze, an outstanding achievement!

They were so heavy around his neck he needed help getting up off the mats :)

Last night's class

 Back in the Gi this week and another killer session with the monkeys last night, drilling passing the open guard and lots of rolling, more of the same tomorrow:)

Catch Wrestling 101 - the half alch in action!

 Although my student Jun lost via referee decision in his match yesterday at Caged BJJ 13 yesterday, he pulled off a superbly timed half alch takedown at the start of the match :)

I was first shown this move by my Trad JJ instructor Trevor Roberts and I've been using it and teaching it ever since; it's so cool to see my students pulling off these moves that I've taught them and keeping these awesome techniques alive and well :)

2023 medal tally!!

 It's been an exceptional year for Wimbledon BJJ on the competition circuit this year, we've competed pretty much every month and the monkeys have stepped up to compete at the ADCC and NAGA events and have had their best results on these two very prestigious events.

This year, the monkeys have bagged twelve gold, sixteen silver and five bronze medals, an awesome achievement indeed and I for one am a very proud coach, everyone has worked really hard all year, it's pretty much been a one year long training camp, with hundreds of brutal shark tanks for everyone :)

Looking forward to more of my monkeys making their competition debuts in 2024 and looking to surpass our achievements from this year :)

Third place at Caged BJJ!

 Saved our best result for the last competition of the year, placing third in the best academy listings and fifth in the overall team listing, not bad for a small back street club, training twice per week and the odd Saturday :)

Medals at Caged BJJ 13!

 Had an excellent last day at the office for 2023 at Caged BJJ 13 in London, bagging one gold and two silver medals against some very tough opponents.

Both my student's finals were very close and both lost to referee's decision, as it was a sub only format, which led to some very exciting matches all day.

Bart had a brilliant day, it was his time to shine and won three very tough and technical matches to come away with a very well earned gold medal, avenging his loss in his first competition at Grappling Industries a few months ago.

Jun managed to pull off a slick half alch takedown in his match, which I'll post up when I get the video and young Dan sadly didn't medal, but managed to secure a cradle his first match, two techniques I've been showing all year and it's great to see them being used in comps :)

So a well earned rest from the comps for a few weeks before hitting the 2024 competition trail as six monkeys have signed up for the BJJ 24-7 London Open in January already :)

Last night's class

 Last night saw the last training camp of the year as five monkeys had their last shark tanks before competing at the weekend at the Bristol No Gi Open and Caged BJJ in London :)

Lots of hard work and gallons of sweat from everyone and I'm looking forward to coaching the lads at Caged BJJ and wish young Erik all the very best in Bristol :)

 Started the month off in style with a superb No Gi session, as some of the monkeys are competing at the Caged BJJ event this weekend and possibly the Bristol No Gi event, if an opponent turns up for young Erik :)

Wednesday night's class

 Rounded off the month in style with a killer No Gi session, as a few of the monkeys are competing this weekend and next weekend in No Gi events, so lots of hard work and sharks all round :)

 Had a very enjoyable session on Wednesday as always at SW19, going over a few options to sweep and take the back from half guard bottom position, plus shark tanks for the monkeys competing at Caged BJJ in December and lots of rolling :)

Last night's class

 Last night was a historic occasion at Northern Monkey HQ as for the first in the club's history, all belt colours from white to black were represented on the mats and all from Wimbledon BJJ students :)

Oh, and everyone was wearing a Gi too!!

 Last night gave me immense pleasure to award my first brown belt to my student George Brown :)

 George and Erik came to the club last night with both their well earned gold medals from the Brighton Open, huge congrats to them both from everyone at the club :)

Last night's class

 Another busy session last night, studying the half guard position when on the bottom with two high percentage sweeps and an easy escape out to attack the back, before a solid of hour of shark tanks and rolling for six monkeys who are competing next month at the Caged BJJ event.

Hard work from everyone, was great to hit the mats and twist up some fools myself :)

 Erik was back on the mats last night and brought his latest batch of medals along to show off to his fellow monkeys; HUGE congrats once again for an outstanding performance, three matches three submissions, can't argue with that!

 Once again another very good day at the office for young Erik as he bagged double gold at the NEON event in Southampton on Saturday, competing in Gi and No Gi :)

Wednesday night's class

 A little late with this post due to work commitments, but better late than never; had a great Gi session on Wednesday night, great turnout from the monkeys as we helped Erik prepare for the NEON event at the weekend just gone :)

 Two more medals for young Erik at the weekend at the Grappling Industries event and no rest for the wicked as he is competing again this weekend at the NEON event in Southampton :)

 Back in the Gi this week and for the for the foreseeable future until the weather improves; a great turn out from the all the coloured belts, a few of them missing last night, but looking much better with the new coloured belts :)

 This short video was filmed last weekend in Portsmouth at Zentai Jiu Jitsu, arranged by my very good friend Colin Foster; it was a two hour Catch session and Colin managed to film a few techniques, this one I have been using for over thirty years, first shown by my old Jiu Jitsu coach Trevor Roberts.

 Another good day at the office for young Erik at the Grappling Industries event today, bagging a gold and silver in Gi and No Gi; this young man is on fire right now, looking forward to his next comp next week at the NEON event in Southampton :)

 Started the month off in fine style with a killer No Go session last night at SW19, going over a few guard passes and played around with the Dope Mount position, plus a solid hour of specifics and sparring.

Northern Monkey Teenage Twister Uppers!

 It's hard to believe these units are all teenagers, I was nowhere near this big at their age, just a skinny little kid, must be something in the food these days :)

Two fifteen year olds, two at sixteen and one seventeen in the photo, four rugby players and one rower and now they're well on their way into their Jiu Jitsu journey; last night I put them through a full hour of shark tanking, specifics and rolling, three of them for the first time and not one complaint or giving up from any of them.

An hour dealing with every adult in the class, myself included, truly character building stuff and everyone at the club were very proud of their beasting last night, with many many more to come, they are the future of the club and I'm looking forward to seeing a few more of them compete in the new year.

 Ended the month in style with a spooky pre Halloween No Gi session at Northern Monkey HQ; took the class through opening the closed guard and one high percentage pressure pass and the entry to the old school Judo Sangaku when the opponent turtles up.

As always, keeping it old school here at SW19 :)

Congrats Max!

 HUGE congrats to young Max who was promoted to grey/white belt on Wednesday night, hard to believe he's only fifteen years old, he's an absolute beast for his age, with a rugby background to boot (pardon the pun) so I better start being nice to him before he gets bigger in a few years time :)

 Another Gi session at SW19 on Wednesday night, focussing on more Judo related takedowns and a few dirty wrist locks for good measure :)

Northern Monkey World Seminar Tour of the UK - Gosport!

 Had a great day out on Saturday with four of my students down Gosport way in Portsmouth, back at Colin Foster's Zentai Jiu Jitsu dojo, delivering a Catch session to his students; lots of hard work from everyone on the day, going over the fundamentals of Catch and covering a few takedowns and a number of ways of pinning your opponent by way of the quarter nelson, face bar and half alch from the turtle position and no Catch seminar wouldn't be complete with out the Grovit technique :)

Specific training ended the session with the students putting what they'd learn into practice, getting to grips with pinning their opponent and all too soon the session was over and it was mats away and a few Indian crawls over to the local pub for a few well earned beers and burgers.

I really enjoy going down to see Colin, he and his students are very open minded in their training and will take on many other disciplines and take what they can and add it to their own training; it's also nice taking the students out to other gyms, helping me out and making new friends and making lots of fun memories.

Look forward to seeing the Pompey Massive again in the New Year :)
