Striking For Self Defence @ Wimbledon BJJ!

Gave one of my students a self defence class last night and I find out he's a very passive guy and has never hits pads before; after thirty minutes on the pads it was a joy to see the inner beast unleashed and to see his confidence sky rocket in such a short space of time.

Self Defence & Sock Wrestling @ SW19!

 Can't beat the sunshine and beer gardens yesterday here at Northern Monkey HQ, but we still had a lot of fun in both classes; in the beginners there was just one student, so I took him through a self defence class covering Combatives striking on the pads and in the advanced class, we went through some good old Catch Wrestling.

Went with a few half alch drills, the Grovit, a cervical spine lock, a brace of butterfly guard sweeps and got the plastic bag out again and ended the class with sock wrestling :)

Not for the faint hearted is sock wrestling, gets super competitive from the start and really hits you cardio wise, great for competition training and training in general...the lads loved it!

Monday Monkey Mayhem!

 Kick started a sunshine filled week (fingers crossed for the Bank Holiday weekend) at Northern Monkey HQ with a trio of action packed Jiu Jitsu classes; starting with the L'il Monkeys in the the afternoon, this class was filled with games and grappling and this carried over into the evening classes with the beginners and advanced classes.

All three classes had a game involving a cheap black plastic bag tucked into the back of their belts and one person had to get the bag out whilst the other defended...it's an old classic game but I don't know who had the most fun, the kids or the adults, things got VERY competitive very quickly!!

The smiles on the kids faces says it all :)

No Gi Thursday @ SW19!

 Two killer classes last night at Northern Monkey HQ, kicking the night off with the beginners and ending the night with a killer Catch Wrestling session, what's not love about that?!

Wednesday night classes @SW19!

 Two killer classes last night at Wimbledon BJJ in the beginners and main classes; great to see coloured belts coming into the beginners class and helping out with the beginners, always a great help.

All the belts from white to black on the mats in the main class, where I delivered a closed guard masterclass, with lots of high percentage submissions for everyone to enjoy :)

FAIXA ROXA!!

 Last night I had the pleasure of promoting my student Craig Lawson to a very well deserved Old Man Jiu Jitsu purple belt at London Fight Factory after the Joao Miyao seminar :)

Craig lives in Leicester and trains with me on my Saturday classes and Bank Holiday classes and always supports the seminars at LFF and trains hard in Leicester at Wayne Lakin's gym and Leicester Shoot.

Joao Miyao Seminar @ London Fight Factory!

 Once again, HUGE thanks to Luiz at London Fight Factory for hosting Joao Miyao last night for a masterclass on the Baratoplata (and throwing in one cheeky Tarikoplata as well :) )

Two of my students came along as well and I and my team mate Craig where most probably the oldest on the mats and boy did we feel old, as we tried to invert in baratoplatas, rock up into K guard and lots more Young Man Jiu Jitsu moves :)

I certainly felt it this morning when I got out of bed, but it was whole lot of fun and great to catch up with old friends and made a few new ones too :)

Great fun with the L'il Monkeys and thanks to Gorgeous George for taking the evening classes, whilst I was at London Fight Factory attending the Joao Miyao seminar :)

Super Saturday Session!

 Another action packed session today at Wimbledon BJJ, lots of No Gi action, boxing sparring and MMA sparring, something for everyone!

No Gi Thursday!

 Killer No Gi classes as always at Northern Monkey HQ last night in both the beginners and int/adv classes; lots of drilling and rolling, lots of hard from all the monkeys :)

New You Tube video - BJJ 4 MMA Part 2!

 In this second video, I show another option to control your opponent from side control, with a wrap around of the arm; when done properly this is super tight and opens up the side of the body, ready for strikes and you can easily move to mount and carry on striking too :)

New You Tube video - BJJ 4 MMA Part 1!

 Filmed a few videos the other night to show how positions common in BJJ can transfer over to MMA. 

In the videos, I show a few options on how to control your opponent, which gives you the opportunity to unleash punches, open palm strikes and hammer fists from side control, half guard and mount.

They are high percentage positions that with a bit of time spent drilling, will easily assimilate into your game, setting up strikes, dominant positions and submissions.

No Gi Tuesday!

 A quiet class for the int/adv class last night, but that didn't stop the knowledge bombs dropping, as Gorgeous George prepares for another MMA matching two weeks.

With that in mind, I showed a number of ways of applying BJJ positions in an MMA match, which allows one to pin the opponent and then unleash a reign of terror on one's opponent by way of hammer fists, palm strikes and punches, either from side control, half guard or mount.

No Gi Tuesday

 Yesterday we mixed it up No Gi style with lots of Catch Wrestling drills and rolling, keeping the art alive here in the Big Smoke :)

FAIXA AZUL!!

 Last night I had the immense pleasure and honour to promote two of my teenage mat savages to blue belt; Matt and Niall turn up week in week our, rarely miss class and have both done well in competition, bagging a good few golds between them, so it was time for them both to step up last night :)

Huge congrats from a very proud coach and all the monkeys at Wimbledon BJJ, Dog House MMA and Petherwick Jiu Jitsu :)

Int/adv class last night

 A quiet one last night, but lots of fun teaching the arm bar from S-mount and finishing from the Spiderweb position and plenty of rolling of course :)

Beginners class

 Lots of hard work from everyone in the Beginners class last night, improvement all round week in week out, it's been a Godsend having these Beginners classes separate from the main classes, I'm ironing out all the bad habits before they become bad habits :)

L'il Monkeys!!

 As always, lots of fun and laughs with the L'il Monkeys on a Monday afternoon, numbers slowly picking up now, looking forward to building up the Monday class, as well as the Wednesday class :)
