I'm very excited to have started the Defend Your Future project with Merton Council's Detached Youth Work Team last night :)
The project is the brainchild of one of my students who is a member of the Youth Work Team and I was in the right place at the right time, offering my club and expertise to help get the project off the ground.
Last night was the first class and after introductions, the lads got stuck into the class; the classes are a mix of Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Thai Boxing and Wrestling and a lot of emphasis on Self Defence and knife awareness, plus mentoring and lots of other help and support for the young boys.
Three of the lads stayed on for the No Gi beginners class and I spoke to them all about training in the regular Thai, Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu classes, as well as talking about competing in the future.
Everyone had fun and enjoyed the class, which went off to a great start and it's initially a ten week project, but the aim is to keep the project running as long as possible and really help to make a positive impact on the young boys and girls in the borough.
